Academic Writing, WS 2011 2012 1st blog entry...

Hy everyone!
After searching for quite a time, I was now able to set up and start with my own blog!
It´s sunday evening, and I am re-thinking my thesis about my seminar paper in de Academic Wrtiting course.
I already started to look up for some literature, but i found out, that it is more difficult than I thought...
But nevertheless, I am now trying to find some other people, who are also attending this course, in order to fullfil my homework and to make some comments on their entries´.
I am also not quite sure, what I should now write in here...but in my opinion, a blog is an "online book", where you can write your thoughts, meanings and questions regarding the paper.
So, that should be enough for the first time.
I am now looking up for some more literature in the main library of the JKU (online)...

Hey Susanne,
I have just started writing my blog and found your entry at the same time. Therefore I thought it would be a good idea to comment on it... Actually,I also think that you can write all your thoughts and questions concerning our Ac. Wr. class in here.
At the moment, it is also very important for me to find good literature. Moreover, I hope that I will be able to write a good sentence outline that fulfills all the given requirements.

Finally I was also able to find your blog entries, I really thought that I will never succeed...I guess that we all have the same problem, as I do not at all find any good sources for my paper...I am actually already thinking about changing my topic and start over again, which I actually would not really like either, but it is really hard to find what you're looking for, isn't it?
Unfortunately, I can not come to class tomorrow (as last week :/ ) because I am having the Seminar Gastprofessor, which is a blocked class, at the same time...therefore it would be really nice if you could let me know the most important things that we will discuss tomorrow...

hey, the same problem like Carina....FINALLY i was able to enter/find the blog ;-)
at the moment i am trying to find sources for my paper, with quite a success. Finally work is making progress, because at the beginning i had some troubles... well i hope it will fulfill the requirements.

Hey hou!!
Carina, you did not miss anything on our class on Thursday because we simply had free because our class was cancelled.
But we got instructions, to make some things online and to upload it on MOodle. I guess and hope, that the details about that are on Moodle.
Concerning the paper: I am now looking up for some sources, I also found some quite good ones but sadly, they are mostly written in german. And I do not know, if the sources should be only in english or if they can be mixed up.
I also thought about changing my topic, but as I am not that creative, I displaced this idea a few minutes later.
So, cu in 2 weeks, as next Thursday is also off because of Allerheiligen!

Hey everybody!
This should be my second entry in the blog, but as I couldn't find my first entry anymore this will actually be my first entry! 
As my colleagues already said, it was really difficult to find the right blog. I hope that everybody has aldready found it.
I have already done some research for my academic paper but I hope I find a lot more. It is very difficult for me to find out, if the sources are suitable or not.
So, where do you mainly look for sources? In the internet or in the libraries?

internet and the library are the best sources according to me but you can also check newspapers,journals and things like that.

Hi everybody! So this is my first entry...I was really searching for quite a long time to find, still, where can I find Mr. Brewsters blog??? Has anybody a clue?
Concerning my paper I really tried to narrow it. When I talked with my seminar colleagues about it I realized that I asked too many questions which I could probably never answer in a 2500 words paper. So I tried to concentrate on only a few questions, those I’m really interested in and those who really need to be answered (which are sometimes not the same questions J ).
I have already started looking for good sources. Since I chose this topic based on my studies in other courses I think I have already find some good ones. Those are from scientific journals, management journals, books as well as from the internet (Epsco).

Actually, I have just tried to fulfil our given task concerning the article analysis. Hopefully, I was able to do it well... At the moment, I am just changing my sentence outline again and I will continue changing it tomorrow in the library.
I am looking forward to our next in class meeting to be able to talk to all of you personally and find out how you are doing concerning our tasks.

Finally I have also found the blog for all the members of our academic writing course ;-) I have been trying several times to find some of your personal blogs here on this site but unfortunately I had no success ...
Well, I finished the article analyses quickly yesterday as I nearly missed the information that we have to hand it in until today 12 o'clock. Now I will try to work on my sentence outline for the paper and will draft an introduction and conclusion. I am a bit scared if the work I do concerning the paper really is how it is required ... but I will see tomorrow. I am looking forward exchaning the progress concerning the with you.

I have just written the introduction and the conclusion of my paper again. It is very hard for me to find the write words.
How did you manage it? My conclusion is nearly a full page....I hope this isn't too much. Now I am looking for some good references....let's see....but many thanks for your advice of finding good sources!

I do not guess that this should be the purpose of a blog to write several comments about where to find the blog of our course instructor. But I really looked several times through the whole site and was not able to find anything from him.

Hey everybody,
I just wanted to tell you some things about my research paper... Over the last week I have been looking for nice graphs and figures. Actually, I have decided to create my own due to the fact, that I really want them to look the way I like it ... a way that makes them as easily understandable as possible for everybody.
As a matter of fact, I have already tried to think about a new thesis statement because I did not really like my first one. I think I have found a good new version :)

I have just written the summary for the two articles of brain drain. The articles are really interesting although they are not very present. However I think brain drain is a fact that is concerning us also nowadays.

Hello everyone!
I have also just finished my summary of the two articles. I have heared a lot about brain drain before reading these articles. In my time at commercial college we have talked a lot about it in history. Therefore there was nothing new for me but I did not like the articles that much because they focused on aspects which I am not that interested in (--> medicine).
Besides this I think it is good that everybody of us reads the articles so that everybody knows what brain drain means!

I just finnished writing my summary. For me, the term brain drain was actually new. I mean I have heard of the explained phenomena but never new the term for it. I think the articels where very interessting. What I'm not sure about is, in how far are those compareable? I mean the articel from Gish is from the 1970s and the other one from 2005?!!? So the comparison was not that easy, at least for me. Wish you all a nice sunday and don't forget to blow out the first candle when you go to bed ...

Hi everybody!
I have done my brain drain summary two days ago and it really was interesting to me comparing such an old article to a "newer" one. I have to say that I heard "brain drain" from time to time but did not have an idea about its meaning.
Today I have also written some further paragraphs for my paper ... but researching and typing is really a lot of work to do, I think you know what I am talking about ;-) How are you going on with your paper guys? How many words do you have? Do you also put in a lot of empirical research surveys?

Hello everyone!!
I just realised that I have not write in the blog for a long time, but simply, I did not have time!!
Although we have christmas holidays and should relax, go skiing or eat cookies, I have soooooo much to do for university. A seminar paper in this course, a seminar paper in another coures, a presentation here, a written exam there, etc.
I also already think about to study at New Year´s Eve instead of celebrating with my friends......(ok, joke :D).
As far as my english paper is concerned: I now put all my motivation together and i will now correct my paper, write the abstract and I try to make it ready for 9th of January. I realised that I have some quotation and citation mistakes, and I have especially with the citations a more or less problem. But I will have a closer look to all the documents in moodle, and I think in a positive way to correct and finish the paper!
Besides, I woush you a happy new year and we will see us next year! ;)

Do not be shocket that I ma so active with my blog entries, but I have to make at least 10 more so I give my best!
I wanted to say Susanne I know what you mean! I have the same problem, there is more than one week til the end of the holiday, but there is no time! It feels like time would be sand and it runs out of my hands, it goes so fast! Somehow I am not very motivated to do homeworks because its way too much!
I started to work on my paper today and I do not like at all what I wrote!

How you doing? Holidays are nearly over :(
I just recognized that we have to prepare a poster draft till Tuesday - good that I had a look at moodle again 
How long is your paper finally? I just checked the formal references of my paper, I also just added my biodata. 50 words are really not much, it was quite difficult to cut so many words and sentences! Tomorrow I am going to add one statistics into my paper and describe it, then I will proof read it on Sunday and Monday - and hopefully it will end in a good mark finally :)
I haven´t seen yet that KUSSS supposes that we have a class on Saturday but I am sure that we do not have it - the 24th this month is no Saturday ;)

I am also very happy about the fact, that we definetly do NOT have to come to university on 21 th january.
Hope you all had nice holidays?! I have to do a lot for university....every year the same in january.....:( But I think I am not the only one who was to do a lot of work.
Now I am going to create my poster for the last two meetings. I hope that I will have some good ideas.

Hope you all feel fine! I have just come home from university. After our meeting today I have had an exam, human resource management. I think it was okay, of course I hope so
Actually I should be preparing a presentation for E-Learning on Friday but unfortunately the program "articulate" is not in the right mood for work ;)
I have to wait an hour for my technical help that can hopefully determine where the problem is!
Did you prepare a A4-poster for today´s lesson? I did but after our lesson today I have recognized that I have made a lot of mistakes! Now I am going to re-doe it.
I hope that my paper I handed in today is okay and I wish you a nice evening and a nice next week! See you by no later than next Tuesday!

Hello everyone!
After I finished right now a seminar paper for another course, I will now put all my motivation and I will write the progress shee, where we should show our progress which we made during the Academic Writing Course. I will mainly focus on the points which were new to me according writing an english paper and I guess that I can easily write 1 to 2 pages about that.

that's a nice idea to start writing the progress sheet with main points according writing an english paper....for sure we all can write 1 to 2 pages about that ;-)

hey everyone, @ susanne: I think you are not alone, for sure we are all happy that we don't have to come to university on 21st of january :-) I think we were all shocked lol
but it's not that easier because it's quite busy at january, like every year at university in january. I would say it would be better to make not ALL exams in january because then we could study harder for our exams...
what do you think about that?

Hi everybody,
I just came home from university now ... it was such a long day starting at 8:30 am and finishing at 5 o'clock p.m. And as there was the exam in Englisch today I am really a bit tired as it was hard to concentrate for 1.5 hours on textwriting. Unfortunatelly I did not remember all the facts of the case study so I had to read it again which was a bit too time consuming for me.
Now I try to rework my paper and my poster because I would not have that much time because of other exams. Do you know how the date of every presentor is organized? Will there a doodle-link be posted on moodle?

For me it was also very hard to concentrate on the case study for 1.5 hours! I also had the same problem as bernadette: I also did not remember all the facts of the case study and do I had to read the text again.

Now I am going to rewrite my poster and I am also looking for a good way to print out my poster in the right size. :)

Good evening everybody!
I must agree with you all, I found it also very difficult to concentrate on the case study. In addition, I am a little bit slower person and whenever I need to write something I need time. Obviously, 1.5 hours was too little for me and I felt constant pressure because of it. Luckily it counts only 10% from the final grade:)
I wanted to ask how many of you will let to print your poster in a copy shop?
I somehow missed our presentation date, which is very bad because If I need the poster on next Tuesday I should start to prepare it already. I personally have problem with the load of information on my poster. I should implement the word reduction method, however, I am afraid that I am not skilled enough for it :O
Do you know what should be the measurements of the poster? I do know how this paper looks like, but is it the size A1 or something else?
I also wanted to ask are you nearby 14 blog entries? I have no idea how should I find all my blog entries within this mess and I am also not sure how many entries I have so far-OOPS!
